I love Dodge . ha ha ha . There is a special tool set to make the job easier.
(Benz tool # 906 589 04 63 00).
If the tool is not available - first , remove viscous fan and shroud (drain a little coolant off and remove upper radiator hose - makes it easier to remove the shroud). Then cut off old fan drive belt (if its the stretch belt) Instal the new belt fulley on the fan drive pulley. Then pull belt down and half instal the belt onto the crank damper (pulley). Using a pair of needle nose vise grips snuggly clanp the belt onto the crank pulley (drivers side of pulley) using a 27mm socket and rachet , turn engine over clockwise only. Here is the trick - you need to make sure the belt stays fulley seated on the fan drive while you rotate the rest of the belt onto the crank pulley , you may need 2 vise grips to keep the belt stretching onto the crank pulley. good luck and don't get dicouraged if the belt comes off the fan drive pulley a couple of times , just keep working at it and take your time.

P.S. The tool makes life a whole lot easier

Thanks Carl.

I'm curious: Why isn't it easier to loop the belt around the crank pulley, fully seat it and then work with the smaller pulley to fully seat the belt in the smaller pully's groove?

First the crank pulley has an outer lip, wich helps pull the belt into place. second you can't clamp the belt to the fan drive pulley to aid in stretching the belt into position.

It's 2012. If we can't have jetpacks that don't shoot straight up, then rocket the pilot straight into the ground, someone should have at least invented "shrink to fit" belts.

Is this the belt that's listed as a "Drive Belt" in the service matrix? If so, how difficult is this replacement procedure, and if it's more than I want to attempt myself, how specialized of a mechanic is needed?

Thanks,
Debbie

Guys
Basically you don't need a special tool.

It makes life easier to remove the fan arr'

Loosen the short belt fixing 6mm screws to the water pump pulley.
Cut the short belt off with a knife and discard.
Install the longer serp' belt in the usual way and check all pulleys tensioner for wear.

(If the rig has done more than 100,000 miles consider trashing the tensioner and idler pulleys. )

Loosen the water pump pulley bolts out to such an extent that the pulley deflects down. Offer the shorter belt onto the crank & water pump pulleys. Gradually roll the engine to "walk' the belt onto the pulley by rolling and tightening the water pump bolts. Eventually the belt will assume its stretched position running on the poly rip grooves.
Once snugged up I put the merest of BLUE loctite on each bolt by backing one bolt out at a time

Once you have done this once (even on the road side) you won't forget the technique.
